Caribbean Cruises FAQs

Ready for a Caribbean Cruise? Whether you're curious about the ideal sailing weather or if you need a visa, this is your go-to spot for all the cruising essentials!

  • What is the weather like in the Caribbean from December to April?

The UK’s cooler months make for a great time to visit. It’s generally the region’s driest period, and the temperatures – which hover around 25-30°C – are never too hot or too cold. Humidity tends to be low. Just remember, this amazing weather means that people will be flocking to the region, and prices reflect this.

  • What is the weather like in the Caribbean from May to November?

It may seem like the summer months are the best time to cruise the Caribbean, but this is when the rainy season kicks in. Luckily, rainfall tends to be short, heavy downpours as opposed to constant showers – so you’ll still get plenty of sunshine. Plus, the islands tend to be quieter, and prices are often at their cheapest at this time of the year too.

  • When is the best time to cruise the Caribbean?

December to April is known as the dry season in the Caribbean, so for the best weather, go during this time. However, that doesn’t mean that the weather isn’t still great during other times of year; there could be higher chance of some rain, but it may also be cheaper.

  • Do you need a visa for a Caribbean Cruise?

For the most up-to-date Visa information, head over to the Government travel advice website.

  • Do I need a passport for a Caribbean cruise?

Yes, a valid passport is required. Most Caribbean cruises involve international travel, and a full UK passport with at least six months' validity beyond your return date is strongly recommended. If your cruise begins or ends in the United States, you will also need to apply for an ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorisation) prior to departure.

  • Do I need vaccinations for a Caribbean cruise?

Most Caribbean destinations do not require vaccinations for UK travellers. However, some countries may recommend vaccines such as Hepatitis A or tetanus depending on your activities and ports of call. Always check the NHS Fit for Travel website or speak with your GP at least 6–8 weeks before departure.

  • What documents should I bring with me?

    You should carry the following:

A valid passport (with sufficient validity)

A printed or digital cruise boarding pass

Any visas or ESTA confirmations (if applicable)

    Travel insurance certificate

Flight details and hotel reservations, if part of a package

Keep these in your hand luggage, not your checked bag, so they’re accessible at check-in.

  • Is seasickness a concern on Caribbean cruises?

Caribbean waters are generally calm, and modern cruise ships are equipped with stabilisers to reduce movement. However, if you are prone to motion sickness, it’s advisable to bring medication or other remedies, such as wristbands or travel patches, as a precaution.

  • What currency is used onboard?

Most cruise lines operating in the Caribbean use US dollars as the onboard currency. All purchases on board — including drinks, spa treatments, and excursions — are charged to your onboard account, which is settled at the end of the cruise with a credit or debit card.

  • What currency is used in the Caribbean?

It varies by island. Many destinations accept US dollars, particularly in tourist areas, even if the official currency is different (e.g., the Eastern Caribbean dollar or Jamaican dollar). It’s helpful to carry small denominations of US dollars in cash for tips, taxis, and markets. Credit cards are widely accepted in most ports.

  • Are food and drinks included in the cruise fare?

Meals in the main dining venues and buffets are typically included. However, beverages such as soft drinks, alcoholic drinks, and speciality coffees often incur additional charges. Many cruise lines offer prepaid drinks packages which may provide better value depending on your preferences.

  • Is it safe to explore Caribbean ports independently?

Generally, yes — most Caribbean islands are welcoming and safe for tourists, especially in well-trafficked areas. However, as with any destination, it’s advisable to remain vigilant, avoid isolated areas, and keep valuables secure. Follow local advice and always return to the ship well before departure time.

  • Do I need to worry about language barriers in the Caribbean?

Not typically. While official languages vary — including English, Spanish, French, and Dutch — English is widely spoken in most cruise ports, particularly in tourist-focused businesses. A few local phrases are always appreciated, but communication is generally straightforward.
