List of Banned or Restricted Items

Banned Items

  • Alcohol and other beverages - In some cases cruise lines have a limit of liquids each passenger is allowed to take onboard. We’d recommend checking this before packing any drinks in your suitcase
  • Illegal drugs
  • Weapons of any kind or any implements which could be considered as weapons
  • Imitation weapons e.g. Toy guns
  • Knives or scissors with blades longer than 4 inches
  • Fireworks
  • Compressed gas bottle/cylinders – unless required for medical purposes and the passenger has informed the cruise line before departure
  • Dive tanks
  • Bleach
  • Volatile and highly flammable liquids
  • Homemade food items
  • Coffee Makers – Some cruise lines provide these facilities in your cabin or have self serve tea and coffee areas around the ship
  • Irons – You’ll find laundry services in your cabin or public laundry areas onboard
  • Surfboards
  • Bikes
  • Canoes/Kayaks
  • Radio controlled flying toys
  • Candles and incense
  • Hookah Pipes

Restricted Items

The following items may be taken onboard but should be handled with due care for the wellbeing of your cruise experience as well as that of your fellow passengers:

  • Personal grooming items including heated hair stylers, electronic shavers, hairdryers, extension leads and table top fans
  • Any floatation devices other than armbands cannot be used in the ship pools, however you may bring them deflated in your suitcase for use in port
  • Radios and other music playing devices can only be used with headphones in public areas
  • Musical instruments are allowed onboard, however if any noise complaints are received the instruments will be confiscated
  • Small coolers can be taken onboard but large coolers are not allowed

It’s important to note that this is a general list of banned and restricted items. Each and every cruise line can vary with what they deem to be banned items, which is why we’d recommend checking the official pages of the cruise line you are travelling with. We’ve compiled links to the cruise line pages below for your convenience.

If you are also flying as part of your cruise, it might be helpful for you to take a look at the list of airport banned items and restrictions below:

Airport Banned Items

  • Explosive materials
  • Flammable Items
  • Gases and Pressure Containers
  • Matches
  • Oxidisers and Organic Peroxides
  • Poisons
  • Infectious Materials
  • Radioactive Materials

It’s also worth noting the British Airways Liquids Rule for your carry-on luggage:

  • Each liquid you carry must be in its own container of no more than 100ml (3.4 ounces).
  • All liquids should be carried in a single, transparent, re-sealable plastic bag of up to 20cm x 20cm (8in x 8in) with a total capacity of up to a litre (approximately one quart).
  • You must be able to completely close the bag and be able to fit it in your hand baggage.
  • The bag of liquids must be taken out of other hand baggage to be screened separately.
  • In the UK and EU, the tasting or testing of liquids, aerosols or gels on the skin will no longer be a recognised method of screening. These items will now be screened using special equipment. You may be required to open the items.
  • You will need to check the current arrangements for airports outside the UK and EU.
