Princess Cruises FAQs

Our experts have answered the most common questions we’re asked about Princess Cruises.

  • Are Princess Cruises all-inclusive?

Princess isn’t fully all-inclusive by default, but most guests book one of its fare bundles, Princess Plus (from around $50pp/day) or Princess Premier (from around $75pp/day), which package together a drinks package, Wi-Fi, gratuities and other extras. Pricing moves year to year, so treat these as ‘from’ prices and confirm current rates at the time of booking. Full comparison in our Cruise Line Drinks Packages Guide.

  • What is the tipping Princess Cruises

Princess charges a daily gratuity (called Crew Appreciation) of $18 per person for standard staterooms, rising to $19pp/day for mini-suites and $20pp/day for suites. On top of this, bar, spa and speciality dining purchases carry their own 20% service charge. Full breakdown in our Gratuities Comparison Guide.

  • What are the cost of drinks packages?

Princess doesn’t sell a standalone drinks package, instead, drinks are bundled into the Princess Plus (from around $50pp/day) and Princess Premier (from around $75pp/day) fare upgrades, alongside Wi-Fi, gratuities and other perks. Prices move year to year so are best quoted as ‘from’ figures, and neither package publishes a fixed per-drink value cap, which is worth knowing before you order a premium cocktail. Full details in our Cruise Line Drinks Packages Guide.

  • What is the dress code?

Princess uses two dress tiers: Smart Casual on most evenings (no shorts, beachwear or distressed jeans in the dining rooms) and Formal on select nights, where a tuxedo, dark suit or gown is traditional. The number of formal nights depends on cruise length, from none on short sailings up to five or more on longer voyages. Full guidance in our Dress Code Guide

  • What plugs/voltage is required?

Princess staterooms are fitted with both 110V US-style and 220V EU-style sockets, so most guests won’t need a travel adapter for their home devices. This is worth knowing if you’ve seen older information suggesting Princess only has US-style sockets, as that’s no longer accurate fleet-wide.

  • Are there laundry facilities onboard?

Laundry facilities and services are available for a small fee. Guests can either take advantage of 48-hour return and express laundry services or self-service laundrette facilities. Either way, you can make sure your wardrobe staples are clean and fresh throughout your cruise.

  • Can I use my mobile from the ship?

Your phone can be used onboard Princess cruise ships so long as you have international roaming switched on and have alerted your provider that you’ll be travelling. You can also connect your phone to the Wi-Fi if you purchase a Wi-Fi package.

  • What is the cost of Wi-fi onboard?

Princess’s Wi-Fi is branded MedallionNet and MedallionNet Max. Usefully, MedallionNet Max is included free with Princess Plus (one device) and Princess Premier (four devices), so many guests won’t need to pay separately at all. Standalone day-pass pricing is available for those not on a bundle and varies by sailing. Full details in our Onboard Internet Guide.

  • What are the onboard payment options?

The standard onboard currency is USD, although on select Australian-based itineraries, Australian dollars will be the onboard currency. Princess allows guests to provide cash or cards in advance to register for Express Check-Out, meaning you won’t need to visit Guest Services to settle your account. If you choose to pay by card on board, payments can be taken as you make your onboard purchases.

  • Can I smoke onboard?

Princess operates a no-smoking policy in all staterooms and on stateroom balconies for the comfort of all guests. Smoking is only permitted in designated areas which will be clearly marked.

  • Which Southampton cruise terminal does Princess Cruises use?

If you’re travelling from Southampton, then your cruise ship will most likely depart from the Ocean Terminal. Top tip: no public transport will take you to the Ocean Cruise terminal. Local transport will take you to the city centre – hop in a taxi once you’re there and after a short journey, you’ll find yourself at the Ocean Terminal, ready to depart.

  • Do Princess Cruises provide shuttle buses?

Once you’re docked in your port, Princess Cruises will provide you with a shuttle bus to take you from the dock if it’s required.

Paying for these shuttles tends to depend on the location of the dock. Generally, they’ll be free if the port is in a fairly restricted area that you can’t depart on foot. However, if the shuttle has to take you from the port to a nearby city or town, then you should expect to pay a fee – the amount generally depends on the distance you’ll be travelling on these trips.

  • How many formal nights are there on Princess Cruises?

The number of formal nights on Princess depends on your cruise length, ranging from none on very short sailings up to five or more on longer voyages, alongside Smart Casual on all other evenings. Full night-by-night guidance in our Dress Code Guide.

  • Can you take soft drinks on Princess Cruises?

Yes. The line allows guests to bring a maximum of 12 sealed, unopened cans/cartons of 12 ounces each or less. Drinks in bottles, as well as open beverages in plastic containers, are not allowed to be brought onboard.

  • Do Princess Cruises include flights?

Yes, Cruise Nation’s range of Princess Cruise holidays includes flights on select itineraries, as well as no-fly options too.

  • What is Princess Plus on Princess Cruises?

Princess Plus is a fare bundle priced from around $50 per person, per day, that adds a drinks package, Wi-Fi and gratuities to your cruise fare (Princess Premier, the higher tier, is from around $75pp/day and adds further perks like speciality dining). Both prices move year to year, so treat them as ‘from’ figures rather than fixed costs, and note that neither tier publishes a per-drink value cap. Full comparison in our Cruise Line Drinks Packages Guide.

  • Can I bring my own alcohol onboard Princess Cruises?

Each adult can bring one 750ml bottle of wine or champagne onboard free of charge in their carry-on, with a $15 corkage fee for each additional bottle. Spirits and beer aren’t permitted at all, and anything bought in port is held by the crew until the last day of the cruise. Full policy in our Bringing Alcohol on Board Guide.

  • What’s the difference between Princess Plus and Princess Premier?

Princess Plus (from around $50pp/day) bundles a drinks package, Wi-Fi and gratuities into your fare, while Princess Premier (from around $75pp/day) adds further perks such as speciality dining and additional Wi-Fi devices. Both prices move year to year and neither package has a published per-drink value cap. Full comparison in our Cruise Line Drinks Packages Guide.

  • Is Wi-Fi included free with Princess Plus or Premier?

Yes, MedallionNet Max, Princess’s faster Wi-Fi tier, is included free with Princess Plus (covering one device) and Princess Premier (covering four devices), so most guests on either bundle won’t need to buy a separate Wi-Fi package. If you’re not on Plus or Premier, standalone day passes are available at prices that vary by sailing. Full details in our Onboard Internet Guide.

  • What currency does Princess Cruises use onboard?

Princess bills onboard purchases in US dollars on the vast majority of sailings, though some Australia-based cruises use Australian dollars instead. Check your specific itinerary if you want to know which currency applies before you sail. See our Cruise Line Currencies Guide for how this compares across lines.
